What I’ve been reading
I’ve read various fiction and non-fiction books including:
- Abiassa’s Fire series by Ronie Kendig – great if you love fantasy.
- ColourFULL by Winitha Bonney – I’ve read stuff from other Women of Colour and this is probably one of the most practical and empowering I’ve seen. No pity parties but a strong acknowledgement of the barriers facing WOC and lots of tips on how to navigate them. It’s not about quick fixes but about WOC getting out there and shaking things up -but with healing, boundaries and respect.
- Persuasion by Jane Austen – just dipped into this again, part of my ongoing rereading of this classic author.
And this month we also have a middle grade fantasy book review brought to you by our young reviewer Jayda.
Withering by Sea – Judith Rossell
Withering by Sea is the first of the “Stella Montgomery” trilogy written by Australian author Judith Rossel. Withering by Sea follows headstrong Stella living at the Hotel Majestic. Stella is bored and oppressed by her aunts… until she witnesses something she shouldn’t. Then she and her trusty atlas are thrust into a world of danger and mystery. Not only is Withering by Sea a beautifully designed book, but something about the vibrant characters and amazing writing pulls you inescapably into Stella’s world. I love everything about this book, and I love it more with every time I’ve read it!
